Tourmaline is a complex aluminum boroscilicate with a hardness of 7 to 7.5.  Its crystal pattern is hexagonal (trigonal) with primatic crystals and stirations running parallel to the main axis.  It was given the Sinhalese name Turamali, meaning “something small from the earth.”
